Denim Silhouette Guide: Barrel vs. Wide Leg
Two of our most-loved denim silhouettes β and they style very differently. Here's a quick breakdown to help you find your fit.
|
Wild Thing Leopard Barrel Denim
Barrel Leg
|
Wild Card High Rise Wide Leg Denim
Wide Leg
|
| Hip & Thigh Fit |
Relaxed through the hip and thigh with a curved, tapered leg β roomy where you want it, narrower at the ankle |
Relaxed through the hip and thigh with a consistently wide, straight-cut leg from hip to hem |
| Visual Length |
The tapered barrel shape tends to visually shorten the leg β pairs well with a heel to elongate |
The high rise and long, wide leg create a lengthening effect β great at any inseam length |
| Ankle Exposure |
Minimal β leg tapers toward a narrower ankle opening; cropped styles may show a sliver of ankle |
Varies by height β taller frames may get a full-length hem; petite frames often get a natural crop at the ankle |
| Boot Pairing |
Pairs beautifully with ankle boots and mules β the tapered leg shows them off; tuck into tall boots for a sleek look |
Best with tall boots worn under the wide leg, or block-heeled ankle boots if you want the hem to graze the top |
| Top Proportions |
Balance the volume with a fitted or cropped top β a tucked-in blouse or a bodysuit keeps the look intentional |
A slightly oversized or flowy top works well; a fitted crop or half-tuck into the high waist keeps proportions balanced |
